Lake Highlands School of Music has successfully placed 8 students at Booker T over the last 6 years in addition to 3 students into Berklee College of Music. We know exactly how to prepare and challenge your prospective musician in training.
Start early when you can. A year gives students a valuable runway, but it is not a requirement. If the audition is closer, we can assess the student’s current level and build the strongest focused plan possible with the time available.
Preparation with Practice
Booker T. Washington auditions ask students to bring together musicianship, preparation, and confidence. LHSM
audition training gives prospective students a structured place to build those qualities with an experienced teacher.
The goal is not simply to rehearse one audition piece. It is to help the student develop a reliable process: learn
carefully, respond to coaching, practice consistently, and perform with composure.
Private Lessons Form the Foundation
As with all LHSM instruction, one-on-one lessons are the center of the preparation plan. The teacher develops
technique, musicianship, sight-reading, and audition-appropriate repertoire while adjusting the pace to the student.
Performance opportunities along the way help students build the confidence and consistency they will need on
audition day.
A Practical Year-long Runway
Our experienced staff will guide you step by step through the audition process. We recommend at least one year of training prior to your audition. Starting at least a year ahead gives a student time to grow without turning every lesson into a countdown. However, families should not assume they are too late if less time remains. LHSM can assess the student’s current level, identify the highest-priority needs, and build a focused preparation plan around the available runway. The exact plan varies by student and current audition requirements; this roadmap shows how a full year can be used.
A Strong Week of Preparation
Students benefit most when lessons and home practice work together: arrive prepared, take clear notes, practice in focused blocks, record occasional run-throughs, and bring questions back to the teacher. Families can help by protecting practice time, communicating with the teacher, and encouraging steady effort rather than perfection.
A Process Shared with the Family
We work closely with each family throughout the journey. As the audition approaches, the teacher can help clarify priorities, identify readiness gaps, and keep the plan focused on the work that will matter most for that particular
student.

Past outcomes are not a promise of future admission.
